Hey DCers: AFF Roundtable on Poverty

I'll be part of a roundtable hosted by America's Future Foundation tomorrow, Feb. 25, at Wise Public Affairs here in DC. The topic is, broadly, how the political Right should tackle poverty 50 years after LBJ declared War on Poverty. I'll be talking about how criminal justice reform may alleviate poverty, which is rapidly becoming a bi-partisan issue (and that's a good thing!). It's free for AFF members, $5 for non-members. Oh, and there'll be booze.

My friend R.J. Lehmann put a nice piece up on the R Street blog that sets the table for the event. You can register for the event here.

Hi. My name's Mike. I was the bartender at tonight's event. I would feel dishonest if I didn't admit right off that my political beliefs differ greatly from most of what I listened to tonight.

With that said, I wanted to pay credit to you for saying something taboo.

To question Justice is to walk a mile in Dante's shoes. It is not an easy concept to digest, but it is a very important one.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, and I never got the chance to say so.

I will recommend your blog to my friends.

Mike,

While I read every one of my comments, they aren't why I write or do what I do. They are part of the gig, and I--I think both "tolerate" and "put up with" are too negative--deal with them as necessary.

However, I have to say, in my many years of writing here and elsewhere, I very much appreciate this comment. I'm not usually sought out like this, and as someone who aspires to reach people and change minds--that what I said resonated with you, who attended only out of professional obligation, means a lot.

Thank you.

In all sincerity,

Jon
